The Carful of Kids live near Austin, Texas, and we love the city. A fabulous place to call home and everyone we meet on our travels LOVES Austin. But if I could change one thing, the top of my list would be the sizzling summers. That’s not happening so we hang out in the water, preferably a natural pool, like my favorite Deep Eddy Pool.
Central Texas — Home to Natural Pools
Austin boasts several natural pools and swimming holes, everyone calls one their favorite. The popular one–Barton Springs Pool, provides a bucket list pool and everyone visiting Austin takes a dip.
Like most Austinites, I leave Barton Springs to the tourists and seek refuge from the heat at Deep Eddy Pool. Other pools I love require a longer drive, like Krause Springs in Spicewood, Texas.
Deep Eddy Pool for Kids
I loveDeep Eddy Pool’sold Austin vibe and of course the beautiful fresh water. Thanks to a recent remodel, the pool features a zero-entry wading pool, great for the kids.
Deep Eddy Pool’s waterdraws most swimmers because of the natural water. Fresh spring water is pumped into the pool every other day and never treated with chlorine. The temperature ranges from 65F to 75F, quite refreshing on a hot summer day.
History of Deep Eddy Pool
Deep Eddy Pool,the oldest swimming pool in Texas, made the National Register of Historic Places. Early Austin residents swam on the Colorado River that runs through the center of town and next to the pool.
In 1915, A. J. Eiler, Sr. bought the land on the Colorado River next to the boulder and constructed a pool with a 35-foot deep hand-dug well that supplies the fresh water to the pool. A few years later a resort was established at Deep Eddy Pool.
In 1935, the City of Austin bought the property but a flood destroyed the property just two weeks later. Built during the Depression as a Works Progress Administration project, use today after a recent restoration.
Deep Eddy Poolhosts movie nights throughout the summer. Find a concession stand and a few picnic tables. Though food is not allowed next to the pool to keep the ants in control. Those ants love tiny toes as much as a sugary snack.

If you are headed to Austin in the summer and need to cool down for a bit, stop byDeep Eddy Pool. You can make it a day or stay a few hours, it’s one of the unique features of Austin that locals and visitors alike love.
The locals favorite,Deep Eddy Pool(401 Deep Eddy Avenue) opens from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., March 10 to September 30 for the wading pool and year-round for the lap pool. The admission for adults is $8, juniors–ages 12 to 17 is $4, kids 1 to 11 is $2 and babies are free.
