As a driver that has driven across North America, I’m always looking for my next overland adventure. I jumped at the opportunity to preview Wanderlust Road Trips: 40 Beautiful Drives Around the World by Moon Travel Guides. Blurring the line between coffee table book and guide book, it is just as informative as it is inspiring. Packed with stunning photos, I read this book cover-to-cover. Some trips I’d done, some trips I want to do and some trips I’d never crossed my mind– like Madagascar.

How it’s Presented

A collection of 40 road trips are scattered across the world, starting the North America’s United States with seven itneraries. Then the Wanderlust Road Trips moves to Canada, South America, Europe, Africa and finishing up with the Middle East, Asia and Oceania.

With a mix of indoor and outdoor areas to explore, find excursions for all types of travelers.  Each road trip get about 10 stops  and readers get a blurb about the important history or culture of the region. In addition to excursions, get tips for lodging or camping, best time of the year to explore along with a playlist and a book (or audiobook) for your trip. I love that feature, since I pair my music and reading to my destinations.

North American Road Trips

The epic Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) opens the Wanderlust Road Trips and it might be my favorite drive of the U.S. I loved the tips on excursions like Pismo Beach’s Monarch Butterfly Grove for the migrating wonders and Solvang, the Danish enclave. The PCH is a one-way road trip that best enjoyed over a couple of days.

The second for the U.S. is the iconic National Parks of the West, starting at the accessible Las Vegas this loop road trip takes about two weeks. After an introduction to the bright lights of Las Vegas, head out to the first of series of National Park, Death Valley, before rounding the tops sites like Grand Canyon, Arches and Zion National Parks.

Other road trips for the U.S. include Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, the blues highway from Chicago to New Orleans, the Florida Keys (another personal favorite) and the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado. Don’t forget you can road trip on Hawaii so find the Road to Hana on Maui included.

Most road trippers in the U.S. stop at the border with Canada. As someone that has driven all over Canada, consider taking your car into Canada for your next road trip.

The Wanderlust Road Trips opens its Canadian section with the venerable Canadian Rockies road trip from Banff to Jasper. I have done this trip and it is amazing. Another Canadian road trip included is the Montreal to Kegashka (eastern Quebec). Learn about the earliest settlers of North America and get a taste of France throughout the region.

South American and European Road Trips

As Wanderlust Road Trips looks south, it showcases bucket list trips of South America’s most dramatic scenery, like Argentina and the thousand-mile trek through Patagonia. Those looking for an unforgettable adventure, consider the Camino de la Muerte, or the Death Road. It’s sure to get your blood flowing. All the South American road trips provide the in-the-know information to help travlers plan their trip.

South America might seems too rugged and remote for some travelers so consider taking a romantic road trip through Europe. It is as timeless as black and white photographs of Vespas. The Wanderlust Road Trip includes 15 different trips from the Mediterranean road trips in France and Spain to crossing the Scottish Highlands or seeing the fjords of Norway. There’s even a trip driving the Ring Road of Iceland.

Exotic Road Trip Destinations

Changing gears and heading south, the Wanderlust Road Trips shares African itineraries with  magnificent scenery and legendary animal sightings. I never considered driving in Madagascar though enjoyed dreaming about it while reading its itinerary. Also find two road trips in Morocco, driving across this in-demand destination.

The final section covers the diverse areas of the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. In Jordan, see its 10,000 years of history along the King’s Road, a trip I have done—it’s one of my all-time favorites. Also included, two trips from down-under seeing the marvels of Australia. Finally, learn of the richness of Sri Lanka and Indonesia on a road trip of a lifetime in Southeast Asia.
